Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography (CTCA)?

A Computed Tomography Coronary Angiography (CTCA) is a non-invasive imaging test used to examine the coronary arteries, which supply blood to the heart. This scan uses a powerful CT scanner and contrast dye to produce detailed, high-resolution images of the coronary vessels.

CTCA is particularly effective in identifying narrowed or blocked arteries, helping diagnose coronary artery disease (CAD)—a condition caused by the gradual build-up of plaque (atherosclerosis) that restricts blood flow to the heart. Compared to traditional angiography, CTCA offers a less invasive and more comfortable alternative, as no catheter is inserted directly into the heart.

How Does It Work?

The test is usually performed by a radiologist or cardiac imaging specialist. Here’s how it works:

  • A contrast dye is injected into a vein in your arm to highlight your blood vessels.

  • Electrodes are attached to your chest to monitor your heart rate and rhythm during the scan.

  • You may be given medication to slow your heart rate, which helps produce clearer images.

  • You will lie on a table that slides into a CT scanner, which captures multiple cross-sectional images of your heart.

These images are then digitally reconstructed to give a detailed view of your coronary arteries and any areas of narrowing or blockage.

Why Might You Need It?

Your doctor may recommend a CTCA if you’re experiencing symptoms or have test results suggesting a possible heart condition. It helps determine whether your coronary arteries are supplying enough blood to the heart. CTCA may be advised if you have:

  • Chest pain or discomfort

  • Inconclusive or abnormal stress test results

  • Changes on an ECG (electrocardiogram)

  • Reduced heart function or suspected CAD

This test helps identify the cause of symptoms and assists in planning further treatment or monitoring strategies.

What Does It Test For? What Does It Show?

CTCA provides a detailed, non-invasive assessment of your coronary arteries and can reveal:

  • Plaque build-up or blockages in the arteries

  • The extent and location of narrowing

  • Blood clots or other vascular abnormalities

  • Additional findings such as aortic disease, pericardial abnormalities, or even a collapsed lung

By producing 3D images from multiple angles, CTCA gives your care team a comprehensive view of your coronary anatomy and helps guide appropriate clinical decisions.
